Lit candles at a slaying victim’s memorial are being blamed for starting a house fire today near New Castle.
Chief Deputy State Fire Marshal Alan Brown said the fire, put out shortly after 10 a.m. by the Christiana and Wilmington Manor fire companies, caused a few thousand dollars’ damage to the end town house at the corner of Revelle and Baylis streets in Hampton Green.
The memorial – for Tuesday shooting victim Jermaine Kelson, of the 200 block of W. 26th St. in Wilmington – was piled “right up against the house,” he said, adding no open flames should be left at such memorials.
Brown said the lone occupant of the house escaped unhurt.
